Swan Lake, Mariinsky Ballet review - Xander Parish lacks the spark of wildfire

★★★ SWAN LAKE, MARIINSKY BALLET Heritage company fail to set stage alight in good, but not great, performance at the Royal Opera House

Heritage company fail to set stage alight in good, but not great, performance at the Royal Opera House

It's a Cinderella story: Xander Parish was plucked from obscurity in the Royal Ballet corps and trained by the Mariinsky to dance the greatest roles in the repertoire. Now, not only is he the first Briton to join the historic Russian company, he has also just been promoted to Principal after last night's performance of Swan Lake at the Royal Opera House.

Don Quixote, Mariinsky Ballet review - gentle charm, impressive principals

★★★★ DON QUIXOTE, MARIINSKY BALLET Tasteful design and perfectly poised dancers in classy first outing for Russians visiting the Royal Opera House

Tasteful design and perfectly poised dancers in classy first outing for Russians visiting the Royal Opera House

One of the most Russian things you can do in ballet is dance Don Quixote, which is 100 percent set in Spain. Don't think too hard about it, and definitely don't think too hard about the plot (which is barely there).

Ashton triple bill, Royal Ballet review – fond farewell to Zenaida Yanowsky

ASHTON TRIPLE BILL, ROYAL BALLET The prima ballerina bows out in 'Marguerite and Armand' as Akane Takada makes a lovely debut in 'The Dream'

The prima ballerina bows out in 'Marguerite and Armand' as Akane Takada makes a lovely debut in 'The Dream'

Nicely covering the many bases of Frederick Ashton's genius, the Royal Ballet triple bill which opened last night is a chance to see both the company and its founder choreographer on top form. The Dream shows Ashton at his narrative best, handling comedy and kisses with equal aplomb.

Koen Kessels: 'there's a joke in ballet we only have two tempi' - interview

KOEN KESSELS: 'THERE'S A JOKE IN BALLET WE ONLY HAVE TWO TEMPI' The Belgian conductor on composers, conducting Swan Lake, and helping young musicians in the dance world

The Belgian conductor on composers, conducting Swan Lake, and helping young musicians in the dance world

Koen Kessels is on a mission to change the culture around music in ballet. Anyone who has heard the Belgian conduct will know that he is the right person for the job: Kessels makes the classic scores come alive in the pit like nobody else I’ve heard. I will never forget a performance of Swan Lake with Birmingham Royal Ballet in which he had us all pinned to our seats with excitement, shaping every phrase of the familiar music as if it had never been heard before.

Symphonic Dances, Royal Ballet review - a truly interesting creation

★★★★ SYMPHONIC DANCES, ROYAL BALLET New Scarlett creation shines in a musical mixed bill

New Scarlett creation shines in a musical mixed bill

Liam Scarlett must be worked off his feet. Just at the Royal Ballet, he made a full-length work, Frankenstein, last year and is currently working on a new Swan Lake; and now last night he has premiered a new abstract work, Symphonic Dances at the Royal Opera House.

Mayerling, Royal Ballet review - 'every ballet fan should see this'

★★★★★ MAYERLING, ROYAL BALLET Watson and Osipova hypnotic in MacMillan's character-driven masterpiece

Watson and Osipova hypnotic in MacMillan's character-driven masterpiece

Sure, there are things not to like about Kenneth MacMillan's Mayerling. Confusing plot. Plethora of characters. Unsympathetic (anti-)hero. Borderline melodramatic choreography. Tense, scary dénouement. But to be at the Royal Opera House last night was to be convinced that Mayerling's merits far outweigh its demerits.

Balanchine's Jewels, Royal Ballet

★★★★ BALANCHINE'S JEWELS, ROYAL BALLET A glittering, precise account of a 20th century classic

A glittering, precise account of a 20th century classic

Balanchine's Jewels is catnip to dedicated ballet lovers.

Project Polunin, Sadler's Wells

★★ PROJECT POLUNIN, SADLER'S WELLS Can ballet's bad boy live up to the hype?

Can ballet's bad boy live up to the hype?

This is the comeback after the comeback-that-never-was. It's the anticipated full stage ballet after the hugely popular Youtube video. It's the press waiting to see if ballet's bad boy will do something wild. It's the fans waiting to see if Sergei Polunin really will be the second coming (he's often hailed as the modern day Nureyev). Pamela Anderson is in the audience.

DVD: Reset

Benjamin Millepied at the helm of the Paris Opera Ballet - what really happened?

The curious thing about Reset, the documentary that tracks the making of a new ballet by Benjamin Millepied at the Paris Opera Ballet, is that it clearly had another agenda.

Giselle, English National Ballet, London Coliseum

GISELLE, ENB Cojocaru and Hernández delicious in perfect heritage production

Cojocaru and Hernández delicious in perfect heritage production

In the annals of ballet directors, always searching for the perfect balance between heritage programming and new work, there can rarely have been a double whammy so successful. In pairing a brand new Akram Khan Giselle with Mary Skeaping's near-perfect 1971 production in one season, English National Ballet may be setting an Orwellian future against a Romantic past, contemporary dance against the most classical ballet, but they have no jarring contrast on their hands.
