John Wilson Orchestra’s stunning 2010 Prom celebration of Rodgers and Hammerstein was as close as those who heard it could imagine to being guests on the 20th Century Fox soundstage c. 1955... the sound, the style, the feel of how this music in these arrangements should go was “right” - every sigh, every swoon, every inflection - it couldn’t have been “righter”. John Wilson is an authority on what the great Hollywood movie arrangers and orchestrators did for the movie versions of these classic scores.

The seventh radio show from theartsdesk features a wealth of eclectic music, from grime to Bach, while Joe Muggs and Peter Culshaw discuss everything from French café culture of the Fifties to sub-Saharan politics in the Sudan and northern Mali.

Questions that arise include: Is the Bohemian outsider philosophy dead? Have the Olympics helped kill off the old artistic ideal of seeking “derangement of the senses” in favour of clean living? How much hipper is Bradley Wiggins than Paul Weller?

Welcome to another show, in which Joe guides us around some of the weirder, smokier corners of the broad church of hip hop, and discussion returns to how far genre can stretch and where originality can reside in a multi-channel, everything-available-at-once world. We also take a listen to more and less authentic sounds of South America courtesy of a Brit-in-Colombia, a Colombian Brit, and a legend of British underground sounds turning Colombian sounds into house music. There's some neo-psychedelia and neo-folk thrown into the mix for good measure.

Peter has just come back from Lagos, so the first part of the show is a brief tour d’horizon of the dynamic Nigerian pop scene, featuring Asa, Tiwa Savage, 2Face, Flavour and D’Banj, the “Koko-Master”, who has just had his first UK Top 10 hit with “Oliver Twist”. Also discussed is the musical marriage and messy divorce between Don Jazzy and D’banj, who has signed to Kanye West's label world-wide, as well as the fact that Ye is rumoured to be an Illuminati. Is Nigerian pop about to go global? Quite possibly.

So here it is, our fourth show of new, rare, exclusive and peculiar music - as ever recorded at Red Bull Studios with Brendon Harding ably manning the machines.

After a double set of live studio guests in our last show, it's just Joe and Peter this time, and thus a lot more music and discussion. Our intrepid explorers ponder whether there's anything new under the sun, looking at new-sounding folk and old-sounding electronica, angry British hip hop, Swedish jazz-punk, Mexican boutique hotels, murder blues and Crowley-referencing ambient music.
