Dick Whittington, Lyric Hammersmith review - big-hearted fun

★★★ DICK WHITTINGTON, LYRIC HAMMERSMITH Big-hearted fun

Dick jokes in abundance told in urban street style pantomime

In 2009 Sean Holmes, then Lyric Hammersmith's artistic director, made a bold move by reintroducing panto at the lovely Frank Matcham house after a long break. It was a box-office and critical hit, bringing in young audiences and celebrating the theatre's roots in the community while producing a quality but unstarry show. This year's offering, Dick Whittington, written by Jude Christian (who also directs) and Cariad Lloyd, remains true to the theatre's urban street style of storytelling.

Aladdin, Richmond Theatre review - great Dame, weak script

★★★ ALADDIN, RICHMOND THEATRE Great Dame, weak script

Christopher Biggins is back in gorgeous frocks

It's always good news when Christopher Biggins announces he's going to don false bosoms again to play a panto Dame, and Aladdin offers lots of frock action in the role of Widow Twankey, Aladdin's washer-woman mum. So hopes were high for this show, which also stars Count Arthur Strong as Emperor Ming.

Jack and the Beanstalk, New Wimbledon Theatre review - Al Murray's panto debut

★★★ JACK AND THE BEANSTALK, NEW WIMBLEDON THEATRE Al Murray's panto debut

Less than the sum of its parts

It raised some eyebrows when Al Murray announced he was to make his pantomime debut – top comics rarely make that crossover these days – but, considering his alter ego The Pub Landlord is already an over-the-top creation, the character fits right into this production.

Cinderella, London Palladium

CINDERELLA, LONDON PALLADIUM Welcome return of pantomime to this iconic venue

Welcome return of pantomime to this iconic venue

What a joy it is to have pantomime back at the Palladium, the first at this glorious theatre in 29 years. And the producers of Cinderella have pulled out the stops; a star-studded cast, a large ensemble, fabulous costumes and a live orchestra make for a magnificent three-hour entertainment.

Interview: Pantomime Dame Berwick Kaler

The longest-serving dame in the business is still going after 33 years in frocks

To just about everyone, the name will mean absolutely nothing. "I'm a jobbing actor," he says, and for most of the year it is true. He does little bits of telly, the odd tiny film role, a certain amount of provincial theatre. Every Christmas, though, Berwick Kaler strides forward into the spotlight of the ravishing, intimate York Theatre Royal and bids welcome to a fanatical army of devotees. The majority are local, but some cross continents, cross oceans, to see him transmogrify each year into the longest-serving pantomime dame in the business.

Opinion: There's more to children's theatre than panto

OPINION: There's more to children's theatre than panto, says the playwright who adapted The Railway Children

Christmas is not all about cross-dressing, says the playwright who adapted The Railway Children

So, Christmas again then. Ho ho ho. It comes around every year. Cards, crackers, baubles, TV specials. And panto. I am a playwright. I write mostly for children and their families. I tend not to say I'm a children's writer because it's rare that a child has made the decision to come to one of my plays. A parent, teacher or loving adult has made that decision and forked out the money. Children can't access my work by turning on the telly or going to the library. So all my writing is of necessity aimed at two audiences.

Aladdin, West Yorkshire Playhouse

Not traditional panto, but a lovely, low-key and thoughtful delight

It’s a neat conceit to set this retelling of Aladdin in Leeds’s Kirkgate Market, a short stroll across a dual carriageway from the West Yorkshire Playhouse. It’s still an evocative and atmospheric location, and worth visiting as an antidote to all that’s bland and corporate about modern Leeds. Barney George’s set is spanned by an impressively solid-looking wrought-iron staircase and walkway, climbed on, crawled under, dangled from, and at one point used as a percussion instrument.
