Chamayou, BBC Philharmonic, Morlot, Bridgewater Hall, Manchester review - blasts of Boulez, magical Ravel

★★★★ CHAMAYOU, BBC PHILHARMONIC, MORLOT Blasts of Boulez, magical Ravel

Celebration of the two French masters continues in big bangs and gentleness

The second of the Philharmonic’s Boulez-Ravel celebrations (birth centenary of the former, 150th of the latter) brought Bertrand Chamayou back: after his performance of the G major piano concerto in January, this time it was as soloist in the Concerto for the Left Hand, with Ludovic Morlot on the podium.

Manchester Collective, RNCM review - something special in new music

★★★★ MANCHESTER COLLECTIVE, RNCM Something special in new music

Performers of extraordinary versatility fulfil their brief

When a piece of music is heard for the first time ever, there’s always the delicious hope that, just by being there, an audience might witness something special, to be remembered fondly. It doesn’t happen always, but I think it did for Héloïse Werner’s Hidden Mechanisms, which received its first performance in Manchester last night.

Chamayou, BBC Philharmonic, Wigglesworth, Bridgewater Hall, Manchester review - Boulez with bonbons

Assurance and sympathy from Mark Wigglesworth for differing French idioms

Top Brownie points for the BBC Philharmonic for being one of the first (maybe the first?) to celebrate the birth centenary of Pierre Boulez this year. His Rituel – in memoriam Bruno Maderna was paired somewhat uneasily with a second half of bonbons by Ravel (it’s his 150th anniversary year, too).

Mark Wigglesworth was the maestro who piloted both parts of the programme, however, showing equally calm assurance and sympathy with their differing idioms.

L’étoile, RNCM, Manchester review - lavish and cheerful absurdity

L'ETOILE, RNCM, MANCHESTER Lavish absurdity in Chabrier's operatic comedy

Teamwork to the fore in a multi-credit operatic comedy

Emmanuel Chabrier’s L’étoile is not exactly a French farce, but it comes from a post-Offenbach era (1877 saw its premiere) when cheerful absurdity was certainly expected, especially at Offenbach’s old theatre, the Bouffes Parisiens.

Currie, Hallé, Wong, Bridgewater Hall, Manchester review - sparkle and intrigue

Energy and excitement in MacMillan… and then a surprise

Kahchun Wong’s final concert of 2024 in the Hallé Manchester season was something of a surprise. At first sight, the sparkle in the programme seemed likely to come from James MacMillan’s Veni, Veni, Emmanuel – his percussion concerto, with the star name of Colin Currie as soloist – and from Malcolm Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances (especially the third of them) to precede it.

Kolesnikov, Hallé, Elts, Bridgewater Hall, Manchester review - the dude who dazzles

★★★★ KOLESNIKOV, HALLE, ELTS, BRIDGEWATER HALL, MANCHESTER The dude who dazzles

Fun French music forms a foil to naked, virtuoso pianism

Pavel Kolesnikov returned to the Hallé last night with a bobby-dazzler of a concerto. He’s a laid-back dude in appearance, with no tie, flapping jacket and cool appearance – quite a contrast with the full evening dress worn by the orchestra members – but the music says it all for him.

Ohlsson, BBC Philharmonic, Storgårds, Bridgewater Hall, Manchester review - grace and power in Brahms

★★★★ OHLSSON, BBC PHILHARMONIC, STORGARDS, BRIDGEWATER HALL, MANCHESTER A time-travelling journey through the Austro-German Romantic tradition

A time-travelling journey through the Austro-German Romantic tradition

The BBC Philharmonic were right to bill Garrick Ohlsson, soloist in Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1, as the main attraction in Saturday’s concert.

The septuagenarian American is a force of nature and an exceptional artist: his playing of Rachmaninov in his last visit to Manchester remains in the memory as an exhibition of mastery. So it was again, in another concerto thick with notes.
