First Night of the Proms, BBCSO, Chan review - from the sublime to the mischievously meticulous

★★★ FIRST NIGHT OF THE PROMS, BBCSO, CHAN From sublime to mischievously meticulous

Exhilarating start to the Proms with Isata Kanneh-Mason's performance as highlight

The first night of the BBC’s 2024 Proms season was illuminated by the blazing brilliance of Isata Kanneh-Mason’s performance of Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto and the world premiere of Ben Nobuto’s witty video-game-inspired Hallelujah Sim. Hong Kong born conductor Elim Chan presided over a vibrant, joyful evening in which apparent crowd-pleasers like Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony were balanced by pieces that ranged from the sublime to the mischievously meticulous.

Remembering conductor Andrew Davis (1944-2024)

ANDREW DAVIS 1944-2024 A roster of greats remember a true Mensch among conductors

Fellow conductors, singers, instrumentalists and administrators recall a true Mensch

As a human being of immense warmth, humour and erudition, Andrew Davis made it all too easy to forget what towering, incandescent performances he inspired. Now is a good time to recall those properly to mind, to listen to his huge discography, and to assess his proper place among the top conductors – again, as one of such versatility and range that, to adapt what Danny Meyer writes below, he might have been labelled a jack of all trades when he was a master of all.

Watts, BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Bignamini, Barbican review - blazing French masterpieces

★★★★★ WATTS, BBCSO & CHORUS, BIGNAMINI, BARBICAN Blazing French masterpieces

Poulenc’s Gloria and Berlioz’s 'Symphonie fantastique' on fire

Anyone who’d booked to hear soprano Sally Matthews or to witness the rapid progress of conductor Daniele Rustioni – the initial draw for me – could not have been disappointed in their late-stage replacements. Elizabeth Watts is as much of a national treasure among singers as Matthews, and Jader Bignamini, music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, negotiated his first Barbican concert with absolute mastery.

Malofeev, BBCSO, Lintu, Barbican review - finesse as well as fireworks

★★★ MALOFEEV, BBCSO, LINTU, BARBICAN Finesse as well as fireworks

Youthful pianist and senior composers offer excitement and bravura

This was a muesli programme: nutty, crunchy, just sweet enough, its success lying in the balance of the various ingredients. At times, such was the explosiveness of the playing, it felt like popping candy had been added to the muesli, but in a good way. The fireworks came in the brilliant John Adams finale, but also from the young Russian pianist Alexander Malofeev, whose playing blazed in the first half.

Morison, Immler, BBCSO, Bychkov, Barbican review - a Kafka journey and a mighty landmark

★★★★ MORISON, IMMLER, BBCSO, BYCHKOV, BARBICAN New songs and old forms

Multi-tasking maestro shines with new songs and old forms

The German composer Detlev Glanert, taught by Hans Werner Henze and a past collaborator with Oliver Knussen, received a Proms commission as far back as 1996. He remains, it might be fair to say, a shadowy presence here despite his prominence back home.

Prom 65: Bruckner's Eighth, BBCSO, Bychkov review - a friendly giant

★★★★★ PROM 65: BRUCKNER'S EIGHTH, BBCSO, BYCHKOV Warmth and humanity on epic trip

First-rate conducting and playing bring warmth and humanity to an epic trip

Bruckner's behemoth has always had its fervent champions – and its muttering sceptics. The 85-odd minutes of his Eighth Symphony, finally performed after major revisions in 1892, build into a titanic testament. Advocates read into it enough apocalyptic doom and gloom to make Wagner sound like Offenbach.

Prom 27: Wang, Hampson, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Mäkelä review - glittering night with music’s golden couple

★★★★★ PROM 27: WANG, BBCSO, MAKELA Glittering night with music’s golden couple

Characterful Rachmaninov, Technicolor Walton and a sparkling Peruvian showpiece

Yuja Wang and Klaus Mäkelä, two of the classical world’s biggest hitters, have recently united to make that even more powerful item, the “power couple”. But much as they are both photogenic and charismatic, their reputations are also based on musical excellence, as was on display at last night’s sizzling Prom.

Prom 14: Lisiecki, BBCSO, Chan - fine textures and subtle delights

★★★ PROM 14: LISIECKI, BBCSO, CHAN Fine textures and subtle delights

Lisiecki approached the delicacy of spun glass in Beethoven, his cadenza dazzling

One of the undoubted highlights of Prom 14 was unprogrammed – following his commanding performance of Beethoven’s third piano concerto, Jan Lisiecki returned to the stage to give an encore of Chopin’s Nocturne in E Flat, Opus 9 No 2.

Yang, BBCSO, Oramo, Barbican review - roots and refinement

★★★★★ YANG, BBCSO, ORAMO, BARBICAN Power, passion and finesse

An orchestra under threat plays with power, passion and finesse

In today’s Britain, too many concert reviews have to begin with the vandalistic threats of damage or extinction that hang over their performers. Last week, it emerged that the BBC’s bosses may be open to negotiate an alternative future for its Symphony Orchestra that does not involve 20 per cuts in the personnel.
