Robin Hood. The Legend. Re-written, Regent's Park Open Air Theatre review - no bullseye for new take on familiar characters

★ ROBIN HOOD. THE LEGEND. RE-WRITTEN, REGENT'S PARK OPEN AIR THEATRE New version of old story wastes talent and resources in a shambolic show

New version of old story wastes talent and resources in a shambolic show

After the pantos, the movies (epic, camp and animated) and the television series, is there anything new to be mined in the story of Robin Hood? Probably not, as this messy, misjudged show takes that hope and fires an arrow through its heart.

Crybabies, Soho Theatre review - sharp sci-fi spoof

★★★ CRYBABIES, SOHO THEATRE Sketch trio in a good-hearted caper

Sketch trio in a good-hearted caper

Crybabies – a sketch group comprised of Michael Clarke, James Gault and Ed Jones – were nominated for best newcomer for Danger Parade, a brilliant parody of Second World War adventure stories, at the 2019 Edinburgh Comedy Awards. Their second show, Bagbeard, was another critical success at last year's Fringe and is now having its second run at the Soho Theatre.

'Weird Al' Yankovic, London Palladium review - deep dive into his original songs

★★★★ 'WEIRD AL' YANKOVIC, LONDON PALLADIUM Deep dive into his original songs

US parodist belts them out, showing an impressive vocal range

The most striking thing at the London Palladium for the last night of “Weird Al” Yankovic's mini-tour of the UK was the number of youngsters in the audience. I don't mean young adults, but children, who were there with their parents and even grandparents.

A Christmas Carol-ish, Soho Theatre review - Mr Swallow causes havoc again

★ A CHRISTMAS CAROL-ISH, SOHO THEATRE Mr Swallow causes havoc again

Nick Mohammed's creation mangles Dickens

At this time of year you can't move for productions of A Christmas Carol, Dickens' seasonal morality tale. Some are brilliant, some so-so, but this one by the power-crazed impresario Mr Swallow, whose ambition always exceeds his talent, is a joy.

Edinburgh Fringe 2022 reviews: Les Dawson: Flying High / Boris III

EDINBURGH FRINGE 'World king' as a young man in Boris III, and comedy legend Les Dawson

'World king' as a young man; and a comedy legend

Les Dawson: Flying High, Assembly George Square ★★★

Any opportunity to watch impressionist Jon Culshaw at work is not to be missed. Here he gives a spot-on rendition of the gruff-voiced comic who hosted BBC’s Blankety Blank in the 1980s and was famous for his mother-in-law gags and deliberately bad piano-playing: “All the wrong notes in exactly the right order.”

Edinburgh Fringe 2022 reviews: Tiff Stevenson / Seann Walsh / Rosie Holt

EDINBURGH FRINGE 2022 Tiff Stevenson / Seann Walsh / Rosie Holt

The world's biggest and best arts festival begins

Tiff Stevenson, Pleasance Courtyard ★★★★

Tiff Stevenson doesn’t like labels, and is particularly irritated by how the once mildly mocking insult “Karen” is now just another misogynistic slur. So she invented a label for herself, Sexy Brain, which is the title of her show, and over the hour she explains how she arrived at it

Joe Lycett, Eventim Apollo review - prankster goes long-form

★★★★ JOE LYCETT, EVENTIM APOLLO Prankster goes long-form in entertaining tale well told

Former Sewing Bee host tells a complicated tale

Joe Lycett’s career was on an upward trajectory when he took on hosting duties on The Great British Sewing Bee, and the crafting show delivered a whole new audience for his live comedy. But anybody thinking that his sweet-natured wit was all there was to Lycett might be taken aback by some of his stand-up material.

Stratagem With Alan Partridge, touring review - he's back as a lifestyle guru

★★★ STRATAGEM WITH ALAN PARTRIDGE, TOURING He's back as a lifestyle guru

Steve Coogan's creation doesn't quite hit the spot

After the latest disaster in Alan Partridge’s rollercoaster career, what would be the logical next move? To be a lifestyle guru, obviously. Partridge's creator Steve Coogan dipped into the idea back in 2008's Alan Partridge and Other Less Successful Characters and now, co-writing with Neil Gibbons and Rob Gibbons, Partridge is imagined as the purveyor of a lifestyle programme called Stratagem – where you turn STRAT into A GEM. No, me neither, but it’s as mad as anything else that the gaffe-prone broadcaster has come up with.

One-Woman Show review - Liz Kingsman's spot-on spoof

★★★★★ ONE-WOMAN SHOW Liz Kingsman's spot-on spoof deep dives Fleabag territory

Comic does a deep dive into Fleabag territory

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, they say. I'm not sure One-Woman Show, written and performed by comic, writer and actor Liz Kingsman, is an imitation of a solo show that catapulted another female actor-writer to worldwide fame, but it's imitation-adjacent in a spot-on spoof kind of way.

Dead Ringers Live, London Wonderground review - impressionists on great form

★★★★ DEAD RINGERS LIVE, LONDON WONDERGROUND Impressionists on great form

Radio 4 show's cast in Underbelly residency

Here's a treat for those missing Dead Ringers (created by Bill Dare) as it takes a break on Radio 4. Dead Ringers Live has started a short season at Underbelly's London Wonderground, where live shows are being performed at its famous purple cow and big top, set within a family-friendly enclosure with fairground-style attractions, as well as food stalls and bars.
