Album: Footsie - No Favours

★★★★ FOOTSIE - NO FAVOURS The grime mainstay's first album is here

It's only taken two decades but the grime mainstay's first album is here

Footsie might not have the profile of a Skepta or Wiley, or even his Newham Generals partner and recent IKEA advert soundtracker D Double E. But anyone halfway schooled in grime will know that both as MC and producer he's a key player from grime's original generation, and still a pillar of the scene. Amazingly, though, despite the fact he's released a couple of mixtapes and four compilations of his instrumentals, he's never made an official solo album until now. So given that, since his beginnings in N.A.S.T.Y.

Kate Tempest, BBC 6 Music Festival review - more personal than political

A resonant evening of eloquent and grimy spoken word

For those wondering if performance poet Kate Tempest would be upstaged or introduced by either pandemic panic or International Women’s Day – know that a) she’s fearless and b) she practices equality always. As such, there’s no pre-amble, other than a hope that her gig will “resonate into the night and the days to come”.

Albums of the Year 2019: Little Simz - GREY Area

★★★★★ ALBUMS OF THE YEAR 2019: Little Simz - GREY Area

Records to return to again and again, from a year better left behind

In 2019, music kept its place as a vital means for expression and escapism in an increasingly troubled and troubling world. Happily, there were plenty of brilliant albums to get lost in over the course of the year.

Kano, Brighton Dome review - simply joyous

★★★★ KANO, BRIGHTON DOME Grime king exhilaratingly delivers home truths

Grime king exhilaratingly delivers home truths

Kano’s lyrics often sound like a wake, mixing mournfulness and anger as they raise a toast to fallen friends on abandoned estates, casualties of crushing pressures alien to the authorities who pronounce on them in the tabloids and parliament.

CD: Kano - Hoodies All Summer

★★★★★ CD: KANO - HOODIES ALL SUMMER A career best for an MC at the heart of grime

A career best for an MC who's been at the heart of grime since its inception

Of all grime's original generation, Kano has a strong claim to being the greatest rhyme-constructor in the old school hip hop sense of dense rhymes packed with multiple meanings. Add movie star looks and a penchant for fur coats in photoshoots and he was most young grime fans' tip for following Dizzee Rascal into the big league.

Wilderness Festival 2019 review - marvellous misbehaviour

★★★★★ WILDERNESS FESTIVAL Luxury lifestyle festival full of jolly good shows

A luxury lifestyle festival full of jolly good shows

The thing about Wilderness is that it’s just so jolly decent. Acres of decadence, sprawled safely over the yawning magnificence of Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire, combine to create a scintillating country fair reverie – a heady mix of good music, high end food, luxury outdoorsyness and companionable folk.

Superhoe, Brighton Festival 2019 review - a darkly vital one-woman show

★★★★ SUPERHOE, BRIGHTON FESTIVAL 2019 A darkly vital one-woman show

Nicôle Lecky's raw, persuasive play about sex work, social media and female empowerment

Tonight comes with a caveat, delivered before proceedings begin by the one-woman show’s writer and performer Nicôle Lecky, who’s sitting in a chair centre-stage. She damaged her foot during Sunday’s matinee at the Brighton Festival, dancing about, and has since had to do the whole thing seated.

10 Questions for actress and playwright Nicôle Lecky

10 QUESTIONS Rising star of stage and screen Nicôle Lecky talks grime, feminism, sex work and more

The rising star of stage and screen talks grime, feminism, sex work, Nicki Minaj and SENSE8

Nicôle Lecky’s one woman show Superhoe has added fire to the reputation of an already fast-rising actress and writer. Based around Sasha, a Plaistow girl who aspires to pop stardom, it’s a clear-eyed, very modern play, filled with its central character’s motor-mouthed bravado and examining the Instagram generation’s relationship with sexual objectification. It comes to the Brighton Festival in May.

CD: Shy FX - Raggamuffin SoundTape

★★★★★ SHY FX - RAGGAMUFFIN SOUNDTAPE Decades of soundsystem culture in a tidy package

Staggeringly assured survey of decades of soundsystem culture in a tidy package

Everything about this mixtape oozes confidence. It crams 12 tracks plus interludes – all produced by Andre “Shy FX” Williams – into barely more than half an hour. It happily leaves “Roll the Dice”, the single which conquered club and radio and featured Lily Allen, until last.
