Mr Selfridge, ITV1

MR SELFRIDGE, ITV The King pays a visit as retailing saga reaches end of series tonight

One man's chutzpah changes the face of British shopping in Andrew Davies' lavish, fast-moving drama

Welcome to the marble halls of Mr Selfridge. All the world, in ITV’s new costumer (in every sense), isn’t a stage - it’s a shop. And bestriding his eponymous Oxford Street emporium, which we saw in this first episode in the run-up to its 1909 grand opening, like a colossus is Jeremy Piven as Harry Gordon Selfridge, the American who came from his native Chicago to open the world’s finest department store of its time.

CD: Serafina Steer - The Moths Are Real

Harpist singer-songwriter's third is a hearty meal of the odd and the emotive

Thirty year old London harpist Serafina Steer goes admirably her own way. Her sound is often sparse and acoustic, but never predictably so, and lyrically she’s off-piste, gambolling carefree from the opaque galactic ruminations of “Alien Invasion” to a clear-eyed glance at nude physicality in “Skinny Dipping”.

Matthew Macfadyen becomes the latest detective to battle with the Ripper's legacy

Perpetually reborn in movies and TV series, Jack the Ripper rides again in Ripper Street, which is set in Whitechapel in 1889, in the aftermath of the much-mythologised murders. Except this time, the subject isn't the Ripper himself so much as the dread and hysteria he left in his wake, which shrouds the murky streets like poison gas.

Call The Midwife Christmas Special, BBC One

CALL THE MIDWIFE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL, BBC ONE Our heroines return to battle poverty and squalor in the 1950s East End

Our heroines return to battle poverty and squalor in the 1950s East End

You have to wonder whether blood, squalor, flea infestations, DIY childbirth and urine-soaked tenements are really the perfect family viewing elixir for 7.30pm on Christmas Day, but the BBC has obviously decided that it's good for us. Or, considering that the ornate and crenellated shadow of Downton looms so large over the festivities, maybe they felt they had no choice but to deploy the Midwife weapon, the Beeb's biggest drama hit in a decade.

Hymn/Cocktail Sticks, National Theatre

HYMN/COCKTAIL STICKS, NATIONAL THEATRE A gentle trip down memory lane sees Bennett back at his best

A gentle trip down memory lane sees Bennett back at his best

“You don’t put yourself into what you write, you find yourself there.” It’s a maxim that has guided a writing career that, insect-like, has made itself at home among the lived detritus of autobiography and memoir. In Alan Bennett’s 2001 Hymn and his latest short-play Cocktail Sticks the author sets out in search of himself once more, finding on his quest not only his own history but that of a generation and an age at an ever-increasing remove from our own. It could be cosy, it could easily be glib, but for the most part it’s just funny, and terribly, terribly poignant.

THE HOUR, SERIES 2 FINALE, BBC TWO Fifties TV news saga becomes more ridiculous by... er... the hour

Fifties TV news saga becomes more ridiculous by... er... the hour

When the first series of The Hour aired last year, there was a lot of excitable talk about how it was the "British Mad Men". Having sat through series two, I've concluded that in fact it's the British version of Pan Am, that bizarrely idiotic airline series where all the air hostesses were covert operatives for the CIA, and visits to exotic international locations were achieved using plywood props and big photographs of famous landmarks.

12 FILMS OF CHRISTMAS: THE MUPPETS CHRISTMAS CAROL Twentieth birthday re-release of the felt ones' take on Dickens

Twentieth birthday re-release of the felt ones' take on Dickens

Made in 1992, this was the first Muppets project after the death of creator Jim Henson, and was helmed by his son, Brian. It's been given a 20th-anniversary re-release by Disney, which now owns the Muppet franchise, appropriately enough in the bicentenary of Charles Dickens' birth.

Painter's first show in seven years is an exotic mix of themes, traditions and motifs

The Neapolitan Francesco Clemente was born in 1952 into a patrician Italian family, the son of a judge. He studied classics in school and architecture in Rome, became a photographer, and then turned, as a fine art autodidact, to painting and drawing. He has spent substantial time over several decades in Madras, where he had a studio, and in Varanasi, with its continual burning pyres for the dead before they are floated off into the Ganges.

Punk meets panto season with the Dandy Highwayman back in the saddle

Nostalgia is not what it used to be. With kids who were not even born when Mick Jagger first shimmied across the stage singing the praises of the Rolling Stones, it was nice to see an audience at the Shepherds Bush Empire, give  or take a few young goths of no fixed hairstyle, almost perfectly fitting the expected Adam Ant demographic. Well-preserved women who loved the pop hits, bulkier men who liked the punk phase.

A Woody Allen celebration warms London up for its very own comedy film festival in January

LOCO London’s "four days of the world’s best funny films" is one of those about-time ideas, because London needs a great comedy film festival. As a warmup, this Saturday 1 December at 6pm, LOCO London and the Hackney Picturehouse are holding Woodystock, celebrating Woody Allen’s birthday with a big screen blow-out of Manhattan – one of Woody’s best.
